Help LGBT homeless charity raise £1,200 in ASICS British 10k London Run!
The Albert Kennedy Trust, a charity helping young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people who are homeless or living in a hostile environment, is appealing for entrants in this year’s ASICS British 10k London Run. Twelve places are available for the event, which takes place on Sunday, July 12th, 2009. The run attracts competitors from all over the world, from Olympic champions, to charity fun-runners and fitness enthusiasts. To make the preparations as straightforward as possible, the Trust will issue all participants with a sponsorship pack, which includes sponsorship forms, advice on fundraising, a detailed training and dietary programme, to help those of all fitness levels make the most of the event. In order to gain a place, runners have to raise a minimum of £100 through sponsorship. All money raised will go towards helping the increasing number of young LGBT people who suffer rejection by parents, families and carers. As a consequence of ‘coming out’, many find themselves living in an abusive or hostile environment or being forced out of the home. The Trust, now in its twentieth year, helped over 1,400 people in 2008, providing appropriate homes through supported lodgings, and enabling young people to successfully live independently. Through mentoring, representation, the Trust helps them rebuild confidence, alleviate emotional problems, and fulfil potential in a stable, caring and supportive environment. Jonathan Penny, fundraising and communications officer for the Albert Kennedy Trust, comments: “We’re hoping to reach a target of £1,200, which is enough to keep a young person off the streets for two months. Because of the situation, we are struggling to meet the growing demand for our carer households, which is why we urgently need the support. The British 10k London run is a perfect opportunity to go that extra mile for vulnerable people who desperately need our help, while improving your fitness, too.” Starting at Hyde Park Corner, the route passes the capital’s most prestigious landmarks, including Trafalgar Square, Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament. Those taking part in the run will receive plenty of en-route encouragement from AKT’s own cheerleaders, with the prospect of refreshments afterwards. For more details, or to sign up to Team AKT, please contact Jonathan Penny, Fundraising and Communications Officer on 020 7831 6562 or fundcom@akt.org.uk.

OUTWARD BOUND
What makes a gay man and a Jewish woman spend the night together? OUTWARD BOUND Following a critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe, the About Turn Theatre Company are taking over the Soho Theatre Studio in London for two nights to showcase Dan Hyde and Michele Flatto’s Outward Bound. Inspired by personal experience, recent debates and as a response to the reality of ongoing prejudice, Outward Bound explores sexuality and ‘coming out’ in the education system and school playground. The story focuses on four very different characters; Tony – the “laissez-faire.., Mr. Cool” young gay teacher who feels that equality was achieved ten years ago and that there’s nothing to fight for, Melanie – an experienced yet jaded Jewish woman coping with an overbearing mother and a recent divorce, Laura – a disaffected yet bright teenager and her best friend Jon – struggling to come to terms with being gay at a school where teachers don’t care and the school bully has designs on him… Co-writer and performer Dan Hyde believes that the play addresses a subject matter that is very much in the media and public eye, and additionally reflects prominent questions such as ‘What can teachers do to challenge preconceptions about homosexuality?’. The term ‘gay’ has now become widely accepted as a pejorative term and is commonly quoted as such by young and older generations alike, but should a gay teacher feel become a role model for students struggling with their own sexuality? Following Stonewall’s recent ‘Get Over It!’ campaign, which was re-launched last month to coincide with Anti-Bullying Week, the play aims to highlight the same important issues that are at the focus of this. Spanning two very different generations and dealing with some important themes, Outward Bound is ‘thoughtful...provocative…,[and] displays real soul.’ (Jay Richardson, 6th August 2008, The Scotsman.) Go and see Outward Bound, and join all four characters as they try to tackle what it means and how it feels to be a minority in 2009.
