An Introduction from the President!

So, you have just got to London and want to meet new people, where do you start with this mammoth task? Your first stop should be Met LGBT! While going to an event and meeting a completely new group of people may sound a bit daunting – it's a great way to get new friends, explore your local scene, and even get involved in local, regional and national campaigning.

You've probably heard very little about LGBT societies and may not know what to expect. Met LGBT is a really active society with loads for people to do and has a really good group of people leading it. Throughout October we will be running nights out, Destination Met (a huge student party), a movie night and more!

I really encourage you and your friends to come along and take part in what we do, the society is more than just a place to get drunk, it is somewhere to meet friends, have fun and try to promote equality by getting everyone involved.

I really hope to see you soon!

Fresher's Month

Well, we all want Fresher's to last forever - but for met lgbt it will last for a month! We have listed some of the hottest student events organised in a calendar you can download by clicking here! The events being ran by Met LGBT are below:

LGBT Society 101
An introduction to the Society
Weds 10th Oct 7.00pm to 8.30pm

A basic outline of the society will be given along with a brief talk on where students can go to get help if they need it, sexual health advice and more.

The majority of the event will be fun with quizzes and other activities.

Destination MET @ the hub (see below)
Special Fresher's Event
Weds 17th Oct 8pm to 1am

MET @ the Movies
Mon 22nd Oct 6.30pm

Why rely on alcohol or expensive cinema tickets? We will be showing LGBT related films at met @ the movies!

Good movies, good company, what more could you want? Note: You will have to bring your own refreshments.

Strike! Gay Bowling @ the Trocadero
Tues 23rd Oct 9pm

Does what it says on the tin! We will go en masse to Strike Bowling! It is an opportunity not to be missed! It will not be a competition, just fun!

Strike Bowling is a superb bowling experience with club DJs, prizes and great hosts! Don't miss out!

GMFA Course (Guys only we're afraid)
Weds 24th Oct 6.30pm

Met LGBT will be running, in conjunction with Queen Mary SU LGBT, one of GMFAs free courses. Sex & Your Arse looks at the biology of the arse and anal sex. It covers how the arse is implicated in HIV transmission.

Meal and Soho Pub Crawl
Mon 29th Oct 7.30pm

What more is there to say? The event will start with food and then a tour of Soho.

If there are enough people – this will be in teams on a Monday night where drinks are cheap and cheerful! We will end up at G-A-Y.

Top Tips for the London Scene
  1. Get used to the main travel routes home - you don't want to be lost and having to get a taxi at 5am!
  2. Make sure you always have your ID - most venues operate an Under 21 Policy - if you do look under 21, you will most likely be ID'd!
  3. Always carry your NUS Card - and we mean your NUS card - many venues will only accept official NUS ID - but if you have it - it can save you loads on club entry.
  4. Buy early! For most clubs you can buy the tickets a week in advance - this is especially useful if there is a band you want to see at a venue.
  5. Get a G-A-Y membership card - most people love it and won't admit to it! G-A-Y is one of the best student haunts with most weekday drinks at £2 or less. A membership card means you can Q-Jump anyday, anytime, any G-A-Y venue! More at www.g-a-y.co.uk
  6. Think safety first! If you go home with someone, make sure your friends know where you are going and who with.
  7. Be aware of how much you are drinking and alcohol and drugs could lead to you taking unnecessary risks like unsafe sex. Never leave your drink alone, it could get spiked!
  8. Where possible get cash out before you go out, and don't flash it about – students and young people are most likely to be the victims of crime and standing at a cash point drunk increases that chance!
  9. If you are going home with someone, don't forget you can pick up free condoms or lube at most lgbt venues – why take the risk of not wrapping up?
  10. Need any advice? Met LGBT is here for you, just drop us an email!

At the end of the day, student life is about fun (and studying), so enjoy yourself – but be safe!
